I believe I am the half-brother of George Aurther Field (DFC), we had the same father and I believe he was the radioman/rear gunner on H.J. Ellison's torpedo bomber in the air battle of Midway. My father was not keen on telling me about his war experiences. He was a WW I vet and even participated in the Allied intervention in Russia during the Russian revoloution. I am (would you believe it?) a US/Canadian/UK citizen but always faithful to the US constitution. Any help you can provide in tracing my step-brother's past would be very interesting and helpful to me. Jim Field 'Dan-y-Coed' North Beach Road Clarach near Aberystwyth Wales United Kingdom

I spent 2 weeks on the Ellison back in 1982 or 84 while in the Reserves. Was standing quarterdeck mid-watch when a drunk sailor came back aboard. He went down the ladder to a bearthing compartment in the fantail. I guess he had to releave himself and had a one hundred dollar bill in his shirt pocket. Somehow the bill fell out of his shirt and into the flushing toilet. The first I knew of this is when he came up the ladder and jumped over the side at the point where the toilet stuff discharged over the side. I had to call a "Man Overboard". All hell broke loose as both the Captain and XO were on board. I think the guy went to Captain's Mast but don't remember if he got the $100 dollar bill back. Also remember the Pakistan sailors taking showers in their swim suits or underwear as their religion did not allow exposure.

Just wanted to let you know it was a trip down nostalgia lane to see the "old bucket's" web site. I served from June 1950 to April 1953. By the way, in the history, someone has it wrong--the search for the HMS Affray was in 1951 not 1961. I remember it well, or you can try a Google search and find a lot of details.

I was assigned to Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for Ellison turnover to Pakistan. Very depressing to see the ship's condition as the the turnover was completed. The Pakistani crew remained in Philly as long as they could, rather than return. I guess life in Philly was good compared to Pakistan! As I recall, Ellison was a mainstay of the "Philadelphia Navy" and it was downhill after she departed.

Reported to Happy jack in Brooklyn in Sept 1962 as EM1. put on the Chief's hat six weeks later. Sailed in The Ellison through the round the world cruise. I was selected for Warrant Officer in 1966. I was sworn in while the ship was in Ponta del Gato, the Azores on 1 April while we refueled for the last dash for home. This is a great site and I enjoy reading about the old ship. It was on of the best I served on.

Served in Happy Jack from September 1962 to May 1966. I picked her up in Brooklyn as EM1. Put the Chiefs hat on seven weeks later. I was sworn in as a Warrant Officer, W-1, on 1 April 1966 while the ship was in the Azores. The USS Harold J Ellison was the best of my 9 ships. I retired in 1983 after 30 years. Great Site!

Excellent site! I was researching the ships my Dad was on, and I remember The Happy Jack when I was a kid. Dad was on her in the early 50's. He still goes to a lot of ship reunions, as he was on a few of them in his 20 years in the Navy. He retired in 1967. He lives in Chesapeake, Va. I'll let him know about this site; he doesn't use computers, though my sister does, and they visit each other often... Keep up the great work on the site! Thanks!

Serve aboard the Ellison, 11/67 to 3/71. Great site, glad to see so many crewmates listed. I was one of the shipmates injured when the ships boat fell/flip and was sent to the hospital in Ethiopia, later arrested as a spy in Saudia when sent back to the ship in Bahrain, 12/70.
